The newspaper advertisement orchestrated by her guardian, was the first of many deceptions Cox’s characters lay upon each other. Fortunately Esperanza known as Alice in the newspaper advertisement, is offered the position as Lady Tansor’s personal maid. This was one of the many steps in what her guardians called “The Great Task”, a plot so thickly layed out that they can’t disclose it’s terms to her. During her time serving the Tansor family, Alice(Esperanza), is recognized as far too cultured and perceptive to be a Lady’s maid. She soon catches the eyes of both Tansor sons, Perseus, the heir to the to Evenwood and to the title of baron, and Randolph the more easy going brother. Esperanza also develops a strong relationship with Lady Tansor, who is still mourning her poet lover, Phoebus Daunt, who was murdered by his estranged friend Edward Glyver more than twenty years ago. Michael Cox’s Glass of Time conveys a story about an uncommon friendship between two women, an unrequited love, as well as a web of intrigue and deception . “The Great Task” is slowly revealed to Esperanza when her guardians reveal that she is actually the heir to Evenwood. Through a story involving murder, deception, and betrayal Esperanza's father was stripped of his title as Baron Tansor. The documentation proving this was destroyed by Lady Tansor and her lover. In an unfortunate series of events, Esperanza’s father ends up murdering the lover. Esperanza realizes that she is working at Evenwood to find evidence of her father’s title. She is also part of a greater plan to reinstate her family title. As explained by Madam De l’Orme, Esperanza is to marry the heir to Evenwood who is Perseus so that her title as baroness of Tansor will be restored. Esperanza finally realizes that she is a pawn in a much larger game that spans generations. When you travel alongside Esperanza to the gorgeous estate of Evenwood in England, you feel as if you are transported into something quite similar to a Disney film. That is until the real dirt is exposed leaving the once pristine landscape littered with secrets and lies. Cox’s word choice makes you feel as if you are there, standing right beside Esperanza during every waking moment of fear and deceit as if the whole world is actually toppling down before your eyes. I became engulfed in Esperanza’s suffering and passion, and most of all I shared her burning curiosity about "The Great Task". Why had her guardians sent her to the Evenwood Estate, and specifically why the Tansor family? After this is revealed, the tension in the book increases. Lady Tansor discovers the true identity of Esperanza and then it becomes a battle of wills, wit, and intellect. Michael Cox reveals “the Great task” in such a way that I was captivated until the last page. The secrets were dark and ran deep. The plot was complicated, but I remained engaged and intrigued. His use of Victorian english was easy to navigate and I felt transported to that era every time I picked up the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. 11/13/2017 1 Comment Oedipus vs. Fate: hamilton styleIn the novel Oedipus Rex, Oedipus struggles with fate vs. free will, as he tries in an effort to prove the prophecy of his fate wrong. But unfortunately, he succumbs to his fate. I wanted to orchestrate the argument between Oedipus and Tireais, so I created a rap that is stylized through The music of Hamilton:
“I don’t Believe this” (Parody of Say No To This) [chorus] There's nothing like summer in Thebes Someone in power meets someone who prophecized There's trouble in the air, you can smell it And Oedipus is by himself. I'll let him tell it. [Oedipus] I hadn't slept in a week I was weak, I was afraid You never seen a Thebean King More in need of a break Longing for Free will Missing Thebe’s prosperity That's when the prophet Tireais walked into my life, he said: [Tireais] I know you are a man of high standing But your life is all a lie, don’t even try to deny And you yourself are the criminal in your eyes...... [Oedipus] He said: [Tireais] Your wife is really your mother, And you’re the killer of your father, Suddenly you’re the cause of the plague I have no need to continue on... [Oedipus] So I offered him a coin, surely this act had to be a joke. [Tireais] You think I’m a liar? [Oedipus] I think you can try harder, here’s a coin for your time. Guards escort him outside! He said: [Tireais] Your going to know sir! [Oedipus] Then I said, "Well, you should head back home” The blind man turned, and placed a hand on my head and said: [Tireais] Fool. [Oedipus] Hey… Hey… That's when I began to pray: Lord, show me how to Say no to this I don't know how to Believe this. But my God, if he speaks the truth I could be the cause of all of this... [Tireais] Whoa... [Oedipus] No, show me how to [Oedipus/Chorus] Believe this [Oedipus] I don't know how to [Odeipus/Chorus] Believe this [Oedipus] In my mind, I'm tryin' know [Chorus] Know! Know! Know! [Oedipus] Then when I look at his eyes, I can see that he lied [Chorus] No! No! I can’t believe this! No! No! I can’t believe this! No! No! I can’t believe this! No! No! I can’t believe this! 10/18/2017 0 Comments Things Fall ApaRt: Yamilton

9/8/2017 0 Comments Beyond The Beautiful ForeversBy: Lina GruberBeyond The Beautiful Forevers illustrates the daily life of families living in the slums of India. Specifically, in the Annawadi Slum, which resides beside the airport, and is tightly populated with people crammed into such a small space. The story follows families trying to rise up in society, and to at least reach the middle class. It also follows the stories of those who seek a better life, choosing to work hard and persevere. The main point in Katherine Boo's non-fiction novel, is the importance of women, and how their role in family, and their ability to adjust to various hardships allows them to succeed. For example Manju, a young girl trying to thrive within her family is about to graduate college so she won't have to rely on a man for the rest of her life. She hopes for a future, and to break the ancient traditions of her country and caste, but most of all by holding some form of knowledge she recognizes that she has power. Whiles studying, Manju takes the time to teach kindergarten children in order to promote and spread knowledge to future generations. She is not afraid to express defiance against her mother's corrupt actions. her mother takes advantage of the citizens of Annawadi, and swindles them of their money that they receive from government anti-poverty programs. Like Manju, another character labors every second of the novel, trying to elevate herself and her family to middle class title. Asha, is an incredibly strong and intelligent women, who works incredibly hard to forge her own name in her community as the "Go to Girl". By overtaking the title and officially becoming the SlumLord of Annawadi, towards the end of the novel, Asha dedicates all of her time to making money through bribes from the other residents of Annawadi and taking advantage of the government anti-poverty programs. Through this, she finds a way to climb up the low hierarchy of the slum in hopes to build up to the middle class. Her main goal is to support her family and her children, Manju and Rahul, who she hopes will have a greater future/life than she has. Another strong female character is Zehrunisa, the head of her family, the Husain's. Despite the fact that she wishes to fulfill the role of being a wife, and mother, something that is expected by a Muslim women, she has been forced to work and take part in the family business due to the ill health of her husband, Karam. Yet despite Zehrunisa’s misgivings, she clearly enjoys some of the freedoms she receives from working. Zehrunisa feels some kinship with the other residents of Annawadi, especially Fatima (who is the only other Muslim woman near her), but she also wants to do better than the poor families who live in the slum. And she recognizes that by working she has freedom and power that she would never have as a traditional Muslim woman. This power elevates her status her status in the slum. Although the Beyond The Beautiful Forevers shares a rather pitiful story of death, suicide, terrorism, poverty, business, and Illness. These three women have persevered through it all. They earn respect despite the fact that women are discriminated against in their culture. Asha, the SlumLord, Manju with her education, and Zehrunisa, a working muslim woman, all show courage and strength in the daily life of Annawadi Slums. Their behavior and actions have elevated them as role models in their community. Katherine Boo's Perspective: |
